Byron Donalds Announces Florida Gubernatorial Run with Trump’s Endorsement
Congressman Byron Donalds has officially announced his candidacy for governor of Florida, a decision that comes shortly after receiving a strong endorsement from former President Donald Trump. Donalds’ entry into the race sets the stage for a potential showdown between Trump-backed candidates and allies of current Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, who is ineligible to run again in 2026 due to term limits. Instead, DeSantis has hinted at his wife, Casey DeSantis, as a potential successor.
Trump’s Backing Strengthens Donalds’ Position
In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity, Donalds highlighted Trump’s endorsement and assured voters that he would uphold the former president’s policies and principles.
“I want to turn Florida into the financial hub of the world,” said Donalds, who grew up in Brooklyn and was elected to the U.S. House in 2020. He emphasized plans to attract more financial firms to Florida, continuing the state’s rapid economic growth.
Donalds also expressed interest in positioning Florida as a leader in cryptocurrency, stating that he would consider integrating digital assets into the state’s financial portfolio. Additionally, he pledged to tackle rising insurance costs, calling it a major issue that requires urgent reform.
Potential Rivalry with Casey DeSantis
Despite Donalds’ strong start, Casey DeSantis remains a formidable potential challenger. A recent University of North Florida poll revealed that she holds higher favorability ratings than any other prospective Republican candidate.
Although Casey DeSantis has yet to officially declare her candidacy, Governor Ron DeSantis suggested on Tuesday that she is well-equipped to build upon his administration’s achievements. However, he also noted that Donalds has not played a role in his recent policy successes, according to the Associated Press.
As Florida’s 2026 gubernatorial race heats up, the competition between Trump-backed candidates and DeSantis allies will shape the future of the Sunshine State’s leadership.
