NEW YORK For the first time in almost ten years, New York City will host its annual Fourth of July fireworks spectacular over the Hudson River this evening.
We have all the information you need to know about when it begins, how long it will last, and where in New York and New Jersey to see the best fireworks, in addition to knowing what kind of weather to anticipate and which streets will be closed.

Time NYC 4th of July fireworks start
On Thursday, July 4, the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks are expected to begin at 9:25 p.m., or around an hour after dusk.
It usually lasts around thirty minutes, and the fireworks should stop just before ten o’clock at night.
Best places to watch NYC 4th of July fireworks
For the first time in almost a decade, the fireworks display will be launched from barges situated on the Hudson River when it returns to Manhattan’s West Side. Between West 14th and West 34th streets is where the barges will be positioned.
Macy’s suggests viewing from these locations in New York City:
- Washington Street & Christopher Street (ADA accessible)
- West 11th Street & Washington Street
- West 12th Street & Washington StreetWest 29th Street & 11th Avenue
- West 29th Street & 11th Avenue
- West 40th Street & 11th Avenue (ADA access available at West 41st St.)
The NYPD outlined additional street closures for cars and pedestrians.
The greatest views for those in New Jersey looking across the river will come from:
- Pier A Park
- Stevens Park
- Elysian Park
- Maxwell Place Park
Because there won’t be much parking near the viewing spots, the organizers advise using public transportation. There will be more frequent service on MTA buses and subways both before and after the event.
There will be multiple traffic closures in Jersey City during the course of the day. Christopher Columbus Drive and Montgomery Street will serve as the primary viewing locations for the crowd. Only locals and emergency responders will be allowed to use other nearby roadways.
Additionally, in Steeplechase Park, Coney Island will hold its yearly Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular at 9:45 p.m.
