Gavin Newsom

Here’s Gavin Newsom’s opportunity, according to a crisis communications specialist: the president of state

There may never be a better moment than now for Gov. Gavin Newsom to seriously pursue a presidential run, according to a former GOP strategist.

President Joe Biden’s disastrous performance in the pivotal presidential debate between him and former President Donald Trump came to an end on Thursday night.

Shortly after the debate, Business Insider was informed by former GOP strategist and crisis communications expert Evan Siegfried that “there will be others within the Democratic party who will quietly ask whether or not Biden should drop out.”

And Siegfried believes that those who work for California Governor Gavin Newsom are currently thinking about how to use a difficult circumstance to their advantage.

“Smart enough, or at least cold-hearted enough, to think, ‘Okay, how can we get Newsom what he really wants — the presidency,'” he claimed of Newsom’s supporters.

One of Biden’s most likely successors may be Newsom. The 56-year-old governor of California, which has the fifth-largest economy in the world if it were its own country, has established himself as a national authority on immigration and gun control.

Conservative activists attempted to recall Newsom as well, accusing him of neglecting the state’s homeless problem and enforcing epidemic restrictions.

Will Newsom even run?

In the past, the governor has declared he won’t run for president in 2024 and supported Biden.

According to Politico, he declared to the White House in the summer of 2022 that he was “all in” for Biden’s reelection.

When the Associated Press posed the same issue to him in June 2023, he remained firm in his position, declaring that “not on God’s green earth” would he consider running against Biden in the primary.

He seemed determined to stay out of politics even during his widely reported conflict with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, even though they exchanged barbs on the Fox News debate platform when DeSantis was still vying for the Republican nomination.

Later in September, though, Newsom was asked if he planned to run for president, and his response was not a total “no.”

“60 Minutes” journalist Cecilia Vega questioned Newsom in an interview that aired on September 25: “You may be termed out here, but does cleaning up the streets of California factor into a potential presidential run?”

When Vega questioned him again, he responded in a noncommittal manner, saying, “That was a — that was a never-ending response to your question.”

Newsom holds the line

Following Thursday’s presidential debate, Newsom remained steadfast in his backing of Biden.

When asked about his thoughts on the debate and whether he would think twice about running for president, a Newsom spokeswoman pointed BI toward his MSNBC interview with host Alex Wagner.

In response to Wagner’s question on Biden’s resignation, Newsom said, “You don’t give up after one show. How does that sort of party operate?”Gov. Gavin Newsom is questioned by Alex Wagner over Joe Biden’s resignation.

Newsom: “One performance does not cause you to give up.” What sort of gathering is that?”This president has delivered,” he continued. Right now, we have to deliver for him.”

In addition to Newsom, other contenders such as Vice President Kamala Harris, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, and others might succeed Biden if he withdraws his reelection attempt.

Regarding the existing landscape, Trump triumphantly and gloatingly came out of Thursday night.
