By July’s end, dozens of U.S. states—including Texas, North Carolina, and Florida—should start receiving money from the recent $700 million settlement with Johnson & Johnson related to the company’s safety claims regarding body and baby powder containing talc.
Texas, which will share in the settlement of more than $61.5 million, spearheaded the multistate lawsuit against the multinational conglomerate, alleging that the talc components in its goods were responsible for mesothelioma, ovarian cancer, and other grave health problems. Starting on July 30, each state will receive payment in four installments spread over four years.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton said in a statement on Tuesday, “We have reached a landmark settlement with Johnson & Johnson ensuring that the company will abide by the law and take effective steps to protect consumers from potentially hazardous ingredients.” “I’m honored to head this alliance of forty-three attorneys general to defend the health of consumers and truth in advertising.”
Forty-two other attorney generals from throughout the United States joined Paxton in the legal endeavor.
Erik Haas, worldwide vice president of litigation for Johnson & Johnson, wrote in an email to USA TODAY on Wednesday, “Consistent with the plan we outlined last year, the company continues to pursue several paths to achieve a comprehensive and final resolution of the talc litigation.”
