According to allegations from the local media, Iraqi social media celebrity Om Fahad was shot and killed outside her Baghdad house.
The attack took place on Friday in the Zayne neighborhood in the eastern part of the capital.
In a statement, the interior ministry of Iraq revealed that “unknown assailants” had assassinated a “woman known on social networking sites.”
A “specialised work team” had been established to look into the circumstances surrounding her death, it was stated.
It is believed that a lone gunman on a motorbike shot Fahad, whose real name is Ghufran Sawadi, inside her automobile.
The AFP news agency was informed by an Iraqi security source that the attacker seemed to have been posing as a food delivery person.
In the meantime, the attack claimed the life of another woman, according to the US-owned news agency Al Hurra.
Fahad gained tens of thousands of fans on TikTok by posting videos of herself dancing to mainstream music while wearing form-fitting clothing.
Because of her sharing of videos that the court determined compromised “modesty and public morality,” she was given a six-month prison sentence last year.
This came after a government committee was established to keep an eye out for objectionable content on social media platforms and take action against those who post it.
“Iraqi authorities’ detention and conviction of several social media content creators on vague charges that do not justify the restriction of natural rights is extremely concerning,” the independent Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor stated at the time.
Lately, there has been an intensified conflict between Fahad and Dalia Naeem, another prominent figure.
According to media sources, Naeem, sometimes referred to as “Iraqi Barbie” because of her numerous plastic surgery treatments, had been threatening to reveal Fahad’s purported relationship with high-ranking Iraqi officials.
