Burnsville first responders shot: 2 officers,1 firefighter-paramedic killed

In a tragic turn of events early Sunday, two police officers and a paramedic lost their lives while responding to a domestic abuse call in Burnsville, a suburb of Minneapolis. The shooter, responsible for this devastating loss of lives, has also perished, according to authorities.
 
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz expressed his condolences, highlighting that the victims were responding to a call concerning a “family in danger.” The incident unfolded around 1:50 a.m. when police received reports of a domestic situation at a residence. The initial report indicated that a man, armed and barricaded, was inside with family members.
 
Superintendent Drew Evans of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension shared during a news conference on Sunday afternoon that among those present in the home were seven children, ranging in age from 2 to 15 years old. Responding officers engaged in negotiations with the suspect for an extended period before the situation escalated tragically, resulting in gunfire from the suspect.
 
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks and dangers that law enforcement and emergency responders face while carrying out their duties to protect communities and individuals. The loss of lives, including those of the officers, paramedic, and the shooter, underscores the gravity of domestic abuse situations and the urgency of addressing such issues within our society.
 
In the tragic incident in Burnsville, Officers Paul Elmstrand and Matthew Ruge, along with firefighter-paramedic Adam Finseth, lost their lives, as confirmed by the city in a statement. Another officer, Sgt. Adam Medlicott, sustained injuries and was transported to a hospital. Fortunately, his injuries are believed to be non-life-threatening.
Adam Finseth, a member of the SWAT team summoned to the scene, was rendering aid to an injured officer when he himself was shot, according to authorities. Law enforcement teams swiftly responded to the snow-covered, tree-shrouded neighborhood, and by approximately 8 a.m., the suspect was reported deceased, as announced by the city. No immediate details were available regarding the motive behind the attack or the circumstances of the suspect’s death.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety Bureau of Criminal Apprehension has taken charge of the investigation into the shooting. Further information is anticipated to be released upon the conclusion of the preliminary investigation, as stated by the authorities.
