Bipartisan border deal on brink of defeat ahead of key Senate vote

A big deal about borders and helping other countries might not work in the Senate this week. Some Republicans, including Trump, don’t like it. They say it’s not strong enough, even though it would change immigration laws and give the president more power at the border. The deal also includes aid for Ukraine and Israel, but now it’s unclear if that aid can pass separately.

Only 41 senators need to vote against the deal to stop it. Already, 23 senators have said they’re against it. Some senators say they need more time to look at the deal before voting.

One of the top Republican negotiators, Sen. James Lankford, doesn’t think there’s enough support for the deal. He hasn’t said if he’ll vote for it on Wednesday. He thinks some senators need more time to understand the deal better.

Apart from border security, the deal also includes a lot of money to help US allies like Ukraine and Israel, as well as humanitarian aid for areas like Gaza and the West Bank.

The House plans to vote separately on aid for Israel this week. But President Biden might veto that bill because he wants everything together.

Overall, there’s a lot of disagreement about the deal, and it’s not clear if it will pass.
The White House said President Biden would veto a separate aid package for Israel. They believe the bill is important because it addresses border security and helps Ukraine and Israel. It’s the result of months of work by both Democrats and Republicans.
Many Republican senators, including some leaders, are against the bill. They say it needs more review and they’re not sure if they’ll vote for it. Some are even planning to block it from moving forward.
Democrats also have concerns. Some senators think the bill doesn’t do enough to help certain groups like Dreamers and undocumented residents. Others, like Sen. Bernie Sanders, oppose funding for Israel.
Supporters of the bill say it’s being misunderstood. They point out that it includes measures like building a border wall and improving deportation processes.
Sen. James Lankford, who helped negotiate the bill, is surprised by the criticism. He thinks there are misconceptions about what the bill does. He plans to talk to other senators about their concerns before the vote.
